Adichie Reflection
Adichie’s main advice is simple: we shouldn’t rely on a single story. Through her personal experiences and even her own assumptions, she shows how easy it is for people to believe one idea about a person, group, culture, or situation based on stereotypes or what we’ve heard from others. She warns us that this kind of thinking is limiting and often dangerous. Instead, we need to stay open to different perspectives, ideas, and ways of understanding the world. This matters especially today, where stereotypes and closed-minded thinking spread quickly—often pushed by influential people and social media. Adichie’s message encourages us to do our own research, question our assumptions, and explore multiple viewpoints before forming conclusions.
For this class and the field of Social Sciences, I will explore multiple sources for research, and think of multiple reasons for something, or for some idea that we talk about. That also means I can look out for what sources I trust. Avoid sources that are biased or stereotypical. That maybe just isn’t legitimate, and untrue. This is important when you’re researching to ensure you’re providing accurate information that isn’t based on your own ideas, unless your own ideas have something to do with the question at hand.
